When we started A Click Away at the beginning of 2017, we had high hopes for it. The idea of saving time for busy people searching the Web, and doing this for them in a way that is entirely secure, was, and is, a very good one. But the uptake on the site has not been what we hoped, and it’s time we did something about that.
One of the things we hoped to do when we started was to avoid carrying adverts. We know that people don’t like adverts; we know that people find them irritating. And so, in order to avoid having them, we made the icon links on our site into automatic fundraisers, and we did this through a fundraising website run by a company called Easyfundraising.
One of the ways Easyfundraising have to raise funds is their own internet search engine, Easysearch. We liked Easysearch; we found it much better than Google or Bing. It raises half a penny every time you search and click on one of the links you find.
This isn’t much money, but it soon mounts up if lots of searches are done. It follows that if you have a website with over three hundred automatic search options, and lots of people use that site, then you should end up with enough money raised to avoid running adverts at all!
It seemed like a good idea at the time, and it still does: except that Easyfundraising have become unreliable.
Ever since the end of 2016, Easyfundraising and Easysearch have gone wrong. It’s no longer possible to see what donations you have raised in previous weeks; it’s no longer possible to see how much you have raised in total. And in the last few weeks it seems that using the service at all is becoming impossible, because it takes far too long for pages to load.
We have repeatedly asked Easyfundraising to tell us what’s going on; and asked them when their problems will be fixed. But their level of customer service is frankly abysmal. The last update we had from them was in February of this year – !!! – when we were told that ‘everything will be running properly soon’.
Well, we have run out of patience.
From today we will begin updating the links on our site so that anyone clicking on the page icons will be taken straight to the site they are looking for, without having to wait for Easysearch to decide to connect. We have already trialled this with a few selected icons, and have seen an immediate improvement in loading speed.
We hope to complete this update within the next few weeks; we’ll keep you informed.
As to funding: at the moment our site is hosted free of charge, so funding is not a big issue. We hope that if traffic on the site increases, we may spark the interest of business managers hoping to promote their companies. We have an idea for an alternative to advertising that we think other companies will like; and rest assured, we’re not just going to shove adverts in your faces!
We’ll tell you more about all of this when there’s more to tell.
These first few months haven’t been the best experience, for us or for you: but rest assured we’re working hard to make things better in the future. Please stick with us – things are going to get better!
Three reasons: it’s fast, it’s flexible, and it’s totally secure!
Modern life is getting faster all the time. Even a few seconds saved are seconds you can use to get things done. With A Click Away, you can find the site you want by hovering over a page title, clicking on a dropdown, and clicking once again on the vast selection of sites that we have!
And if you can’t find the site you want … all you need do is tell us! Using our Make This Site Better page, you can tell us about any site you need that we don’t have. As long as it’s secure, we’ll include it!
With A Click Away you don’t need to worry. We’ve checked every site we link to, and will check any that we add. The only sites we carry are ones that we know you can depend on.
